www.aegeeoviedo.org
www.youropia.jimdo.com

Filharmonia w Krakowie

Yesterday was a busy day for me.
It does not mean that I was rushing all the time, but I was going from one place to another linking every activity.

During the morning, cleaning the bathroom and the kitchen was the main "lovely" activity. Since I spent half of the weekend travelling and the other half almost death resting, I had to clean during week days...
There is one thing certain. The s**t does not forgive anyone, and goes all around until the most unimaginable places ever... I think I met some specks of dust who were created in 1895...

After this great entertainment and with the cleaning products' smell still in my hands, I put myself towards the University where my professor gave me a great piece of work for stepping forward in my thesis. Today I was analyzing it and I think it will be working as soon as possible.

Small bite and I continued in the University, prepa
ring a motivation letter for a job in Nokia.
I have to use a proper language, of course in English, not my mother tongue, so some times I need help from the net, from people who are helping me with the content and way of expressing myself (thank you Emanuele) and the help of my last English language teacher in Spain, who is British and always willing to help with her Proficie
ncy way of correcting every kind of written paragraph.

It seems like I have many of the requirements of the position, but I know it is not going to be easy to get the position. Anyway, nobody says that life is easy... :)
I'll keep this blog upload with further news about it...

After struggling with English written language, I rem
embered that I was invited to a concert in Filharmonia (Koncert symfoniczny). Aga, my always energetic and motivated flat mate, told us all to go because her cousin was playing contrabass and she would like to see us all in there.

The concert was at 19:00, so at 18:00 I was already going home to get ready and meet Bartek and Szymczak for getting ready and leave towards the concert.
I was told to dress smart, so the only choice I had was to wear a suit (the one I tailor-made in Bangkok), cause I still did not wash the clothes from
Copenhagen trip... (I know, I know, it is hightime. I promiss it is going to be the next thing after finishing this post.)

Bartek also decided to wear his suit, and he exposed: "I don't like you being the only one wearing suit...". Actually, he likes wearing suit even more than me... hehe.

Well, the point of the post: The concert in Filharmonia.
Here you can see the pieces:
Maurice Ravel (1875-1937)
Le tombeau de Couperlin
1. Prélude
2. Fornala
3. Menuet
4. Rigaudon

Jacques Ibert (1890-1962)
Koncert fletowy
1. Allegretto
2. Andante
3. Finale -Alegro scherzando

***

Maurice Ravel (1875-1937)
Il suita z baletu Dafnis i Chloe
1. Lever du jour
2. Pantomima
3. Danse générale

My impression is that they have made a great job coordinating such a big choir and the orchesta. Last pieces were the most energetic and there was not really time to think in different things since my body hair was bristled the most of the time...

The second best thing that I want to stress is the guy in the flute.
As some of you know I play flutes from time to time while being in Spain, but of course not with such a knowledge and good and smooth techniques he had.
The flute lovers should have been there with me and see him playing... It was marvelous...

The director was also very impressive gaining the respect of the audience as well as a many times repeated warm applause.
And last but not least, I want to mention Jakub Str
ycharz, the first contrabass and our flat mate's cousin, who created a big expectation among us... Well done mate!

More concretely the "starrings" were:

Wiesław Suruło --- Flute
Lidia Matynia --- Choir master
Sławek Adam Wróblewski --- Director

Chór i Orkiestra Symfoniczna
Akademii Muzycznej w Krakowie

And here a small picture of the concert in the middle of a bit applause.
(Taken with my N900 :))

Nice time in Filharmonia, with nice people during a nice day.

Nokia Qt Training Copenhagen day 1

Lots of information and a very good speed on the speeches and demonstrations.
I felt sometimes like in the University in the first years. Writing and trying to catch as much as possible of what is on the screen, and also what it is going out of their mouths...

My Qt background from the thesis helped me a lot in not to get lost in the first 2 hours and it helped me to get all the concepts showed there.
Even if my environment was giving some problems, I could understand the way of doing things.
Valuable knowledge in how to create apps for the N900.

The great moment came, the N900 was delivered to us only after signing a paper saying that you are using it with academic and research purposes...
That easy! :)

Now I'm in Thorbjorn house with my new N900 about to set up some libraries inside and get it ready for tomorrow's session. When I guess the most interesting part of the training will take part.

Afterwards I'll have a meeting with Jonas, a Danish guy whom I met in Pamplona last summer during San Fermines. I really need to disconnect a bit after the long "inputs" day.

Maemo developer day

As I commented in my first post before the Maemo Developer day, it was a "marketing" day.
Many features of the new Maemo 5 Operating System were told, as well as Ovi store services and ways to publish your applications.

As I mentioned before, I was sitting in the same table with Peter, and Timmo (Forum Nokia Worker), having a nice time and chats with them.

The last hours of the training I met an Italian guy, working also for Nokia in Copenhagen. His name is Emanuele and even though he is working already for 2 years in Nokia and he was also studying the previous year, he is originally from Padova.

I have been having some problems with getting ready my environment for the next day, and the trainer, Tino, and some other guys seemed really helpful and willing to help. I was really pleased and I discover that in the software developing world there is not only selfishness and proudness, but also good folks and environment.

The place where we stayed was gorgeous, the food provided amazing, as well as the coffee, cookines, fruits and everything you wanted... Nokia seems to think that new developers are priceless, and they show it to us. We really seem valuable for them.

During the day there were two surprises.
One was a competition online where you can get an N900 for free, and the second one was that in this training we are getting a N900 for free on Thursday. For us to develop and improve the actual "virgin" Maemo 5 based on linux OS for Nokia tablets.

In the end of the day I met the Spanish participants in this event. Ihad a nice chat about the Qt market in Spain and I left after 6pm home, to set up some things for the next day and meeting again the Spanish guys, have a bite and a beer in the centre of Copenhagen.

After that I was not able to go to bed until 1am when finlly my environment was set up correctly and everything was prepared for next day....

Maemo developer day & Qt training

Waking up at 6:30, preparing an abundant breakfast and getting ready for going to the Maemo developer day, the first day in the programme of the training.

Regarding to the programme sent, I guess today is going to be the most theoretical day. All the inputs of the maemo platform, many different people will be speaking and in the end of the day we'll be able to understand a bit more the maemo, Ovi and Nokia concepts.

My first two partners on the table, a German guy called Peter and a "Nokia" representative called Tommi Kenttämies.

And the first songs I've heard in here are from Eric Clapton and Michael Jackson :)

Let's see how it is going to be. I'll keep you updated as much as I'll have time and strength!

P.S. Writing from the conference room 10 minutes before the Welcome agenda starts.

Sunny, sportive and inspiring morning in Krakow

I think that the best part to start from is to explain was I've done this morning...

After having breakfast at 9am and having a nice chat with my flat-mates I tidied up the bedroom, giving some space for breathing inside... :)

I was feeling nice after a good 7h sleeping the last night, and I wanted to make some sport, due to the fact that there was a long time since I did some kind of sportive movement...

At 11:30 I started thinking of going jogging, also regarding to the very sunny and "warm" morning we have here in Krakow today. (13ºC)
So I dressed up and stretching my legs and body, getting ready for the 1h 11 mins of jogging...

The main point of this running, not was the sport itself, but the amount of people I've seen, the good weather and the very nice thoughts that came to my mind.
I was running in Błonia, a very famous green open field in Krakow, where the R.I.P. last Polish Pope used to give the speeches in here, the many times said most cultural city of Poland.

Families, people jogging, biking, skating, little kids learning how to walk, couples kissing, old couples sitting and watching. So different and at the same time with only one thing in common this morning, to enjoy this sunny morning of Saturday.

As you can imagine, days here don't last so much (at 5pm it is already dark...), and during the week people work, study and are mainly busy with their life, having only free time after 5 or 6pm...
Then you can imagine how welcome is a sunny free day in Krakow. Yes, with a big smile and fancying doing things!

Haven't I enjoyed such a morning in this way since several weeks ago. And I assure you that it was one of these moments that are really worth-living.

Have a nice (even better than mine :) ) weekend!

Scatter plots and Start/Stop properties

As I said yesterday, the next task was to manage to link the buttons with the graphs.
And today, I managed to create a button functionality for starting and stopping the graphs.

I also managed to create the buttons inside the Group boxes on the left side of the UI.

I read how to scatter data, so here you are a screenshot:

Once again, step by step we'll reach the end of our purposes.
I hope in some minutes I'll meet my professor and we'll talk about the signal implementation. If we are able to take all the signal processing methods needed right now, I'll put myself into the implementation this weekend.

If not, maybe I'll do some research about Qt for Maemo this weekend, since on Tuesday I'm flying to Copenhagen to Nokia's 3 day training.

Let's see...

Have a nice weekend!

Finally my graphs how I want! Solution: QDialog

Here I am again with my lovely thesis...
After some trials with Qt and inheriting Qwt classes to plot good graphs on my user interface,
finally I found out the way to paint graphs and to show some buttons at the same time.

First of all I was creating QMainWindows, setting
my plot (inherited from QwtPlot) as the main widget of the window. But this way did not allow me to plot buttons, ButtonGroups, etc...
Setting the plot as main widget associated the whole graph to the entire window as following:

So, this was really limited for my purposes... :(

I got a bit crazy trying to plot more stuff in this mainwindow, but I (fortunately) gave up quick...

I discovered thanks to "C++ GUI Programming with Qt 4", book by Jasmin Blanchette & Mark Summerfield, that my best option was creating a QDialog and create the user interface window coding my own.

Qt Designer allows you to paint things manually, but I really prefer to set up things from the core of the programme and know exactly what I am doing...

The result of my research in how to create dialogues today is as following:

Obviously, the graphs have nothing to do with what is written, and it is only a random flow of data, but the OFDM methods are not still implemented since they'll be taken from open source projects already working properly.

But I think that my knowledge on how to create the windows is quite enough for plotting what I want.

Next step: Link buttons and actions in the graphs, such stopping, saving the graphs in jpg, change functions plotted, etc...

Step by step and everyday closer...

Thanks for reading!

World Press Photo 2009

Polish independence day 11th November.
Today in Poland everyone is resting, travelling or having fun with family and friends.
And as a Krakow citizen I did the same.

Morning for ironing and solving some computer problems.

And afternoon for going to World Press Photo in Krakow.
http://www.worldpressphoto.org/

The annual exposition that really impresses me. Last year I was there as well and I have to say that this year the level is awesome as well!

Anthony Suau and his pictures related with the American stock market and the feeling of the economic crisis.
Brenda Ann and her pictures of a 7 children family mother raising them with not so many resources.
Lissette Lemus and her impressive pictures of people killed in "El Salvador" by mafias.
Chen Qinggang and Bo Bor, showing us the recent earthquake disaster in Beichuan city, China, where many people died and many other ones lost their entire property.
Sebastian D'Souza and his collection of pictures of Mumbai (India) railway station's masacre, with 58 people dead.
Olivier Laban Mattei and the consequences of the cyclone in Burma...
Walter Astrada and his portfolio of pictures related to Kenya and the violence nowadays...
Justyna Mielnikiwicz shows her view of the Georgian-Russian conflict of the last year.
Pep Bonet gives to the exposition the main picture (seen on the tickets), with a transexual guy from Honduras, giving the view of how they earn money with prostitution.
Carlos Cazalis analyze the number of homeless people in Sao Paulo, giving an interesting view of where they sleep and take shelter from the rain.
Alexander Taran gives us some images about the 1920's and 1930's Russian style of fight called Sambo, original from USSR but extended worldwide nowadays...
Steve Winter and his snow leopards also are in the exhibition.
And some others are also there with many different kind of pictures.

I really have to say how impressed I am after that exhibition. The pictures are gorgeous in quality, but not only that, also the moments captured and feelings that the camera does not give to us but only the good photographers do, are there.

Some pictures of the exposition:
(Coming soon)

If you have the exposition nearby and you like photography, do not hesitate about going!
It is really worth it!

Greetings!

Zeitgeist: The end of the monetary system?

A Sunday at home, doing not so much but resting, and enjoying spare time without any worries.

I was told last year about Zeitgeist The movie. And I did not see it until today.
It proposes a new world system based on resources, not on money.
It made me really think about how this world would be with this system, without being worried about earning money, having all the basic needs covered and only worrying about further issues, as research, about the Universe, about things for developing out knowledge and human society.

Why do we put barriers to ourselves?
Why do we stop the development?
Why are we slaves of the work, for earning that thing called money?
Do we really need the money?
Do we really need brands?
Do we really need to have ads in every corner of the world?
Does the society have to be based on the money to continue growing and developing itself?

These among many other ones, are questions to raise now in my mind after watching this documental:

Zeitgeist - Addendum

They are Spanish versions. But you can find different versions easily.

I have to say that before this I always was thinking that the money is not the solution for our problems. It is a barrier that is stopping us to develop and grow.

After watching this, now I know that many people think in this way, there is a big movement supporting it and I am really glad about reading it on the net, the place where the REAL, and not manipulated by media testimonals, thinkings, and opinions are reflected.

Blogs, portals, social networks, and many other ways to publish contents can really make a change.

Sites of the movement:
http://thezeitgeistmovement.com/
http://movimientozeitgeist.org/ (Spanish site)

Now it is up to us, to all of you, to the ones who are living on this planet. Our planet.

Think about it.

"Aryanization" 1933-1945.

Yesterday, the Inauguration Museum of History at Oscar Schindler factory in Krakow took place.

There I was, "listening" to more than one hour of speeches and thanks from authorities from Krakow and Leipzig, Germany.
The speeches were either in German or Polish and of course, translated into Polish/German depending who was giving the speech.

I really did not know which one I preferred, I don't understand 100% of neither Polish nor German. Let's say that sometimes I understood things mixing both, the speech and the translation. But anyway it was really hard for me to get everything, over all, after 1 hour speeches, when my brain started to melt...

Mainly, the speeches were about the history of the cities (Krakow and Leipzig) concerning the "Aryanization" of society from the National-Socialism party during 1933 till 1945. Basically, how the jews were tortured, stolen and killed. For the SS the jews were "Aryanised".
Also the relationships in between the cities were mentioned as well as different compliments and thanks to everyone. (I think I heard Dziękuję and Danke/Vielen dank more than 50 times during 1 hour. So polite are they in Centre-Europe! :) )

Of course, I missed several things, but as i said, I needed 150% of my brain to translate and to decipher everything...

In the exposition could we see several stories about jews from the late 1800's and early 1900's with such a prosperous business, families and reputations in the German society...

How the regimen planned to get their business without losing any cent in the change, having the same reputation but changing completely the place where the profit was ending up...

The 1st of April 1933 Boycott explained as a way of defense against the Jew society...

Art stealing, and many other interesting things to see and think about...

Pretty most of the exposition can be seen in the following pdf (Pictures included!):
http://www.juedischesleipzig.de/arisierung_engl09.pdf

And actually better written than the way could I ever explain it.

Further information, of course, in beloved wikipedia:

No luck with external microphone and Mac...

As I am reading out on the net, the Macbook I own has not a input jack 3.5mm for a external microphone...

It has a LineIn jack, but this one is not sufficiently amplified to get the signal from a microphone powerful enough to be recognised by the OS...

So, no luck with the external micro and JackOSX...

Macbook is sometimes not as nice as we expect...

I'll try it out with the BuiltIn Microphone.

Source: http://www.philmug.ph/forum/archive/index.php/t-14939.html

Setting up JackOSX and the first examples...

Here I am, configuring a pretty handy application for using the jack ports as input/output of data, for afterwards processing.

Following the instructions of site:
http://dis-dot-dat.net

I am now able to compile and open a basic C example of jack. (metronome)

This will be needed for my thesis for capturing the data from it and transform it into OFDM signal. So my purpose is to take data from the jack port and convert it into OFDM signal to further study.
It did not take so long to set it up, so I guess it will be easy to plug it into the Qt-C++ code.

Note: I had a problem with the files in Sourceforge repository.
They are pretty old (from 2003) and jack_client_new is deprecated. SO I changed it for jack_client_open and I added 2 zeros in the new inputs of the function. It stopped to say that the function is deprecated...

Now I'll keep going a bit more trying to compile different examples to wide a bit my knowledge...

Let's see how and when I end up...

Fernando on the radio!

Yesterday a regional radio programme called me to speak a little bit about my life in Krakow.

(Of course in Spanish!)

In the link below you can hear me live! :)

Enjoy!

Photo-session in Krakow

Sunday, a bit tired and not fancying to do so much.
My flatmate and me decided to spend some time shooting in a pretty new studio in Krakow.

Tools weren't the best ones, but we had fun anyway...

P.S. A picture of mine could be watched on my facebook profile...

Hello to Qt, Maemo 5 & Nokia N900 :)

I think I'd should start telling that I am accepted to attend a training in Qt programing
for maemo (The based-on-linux operating system of the coming soon-Nokia N900).

The training will be in Copenhagen from 18 to 20 of November 2009, I have already my flights booked and a very hospitable Danish guy who is hosting me thanks to CouchSurfing.org project!!

The point is that we will be programming in C++, with Qt and for the Maemo OS.
Seems easy? Probably, but it took me some time to know how to start with all these techs together...

First of all, I'm working under MacOSX, so no
way to install scratchbox in here.

So I had to download an vmdk image for runni
ng under VM (I'm using VirtualBox).
This vmdk englobes an entire Ubuntu OS oriented to Maemo developing.
But not everything was done already.

After, Installing SDK and play with scratchbox while Starting with Maemo SDK, I was finally able to compile and run the HelloQt programme under scratchbox as well.

The result? A fancy N900 window saying: Hello Qt!

Isn't it nice? :)

I hope I'll be able to create something more complicated before the training!
Thank you for reading!

FFTW finally working under Qt code

FFTW was not working the way I wanted actually and yesterday I became crazy about it, giving me a not so good day...

Today I am quite sure that the problem is solved.

I found some hints on the net that helped me...

http://www.fftw.org/faq/section3.html#linkfails

"Question 3.13. My program does not link (on Unix).

The libraries must be listed in the correct order (-lfftw3 -lm for FFTW 3.x) and after your program sources/objects. (The general rule is that if A uses B, then A must be listed before B in the link command.)."

http://www.qtcentre.org/forum/archive/index.php/t-337.html

I tried a simple example of FFTW and it worked out perfectly not giving any error either warning.

Since I am working on Qt projects, it was not so easy as writing gcc -lfftw3 -lm helloworld.c,
so I had to add a line in the .pri file.
Here the new line in bold:
LIBS += -L$${QWT_ROOT}/lib -l$${QWTLIB} \
/usr/local/lib/libfftw3.a

Thanks to the ones who helped me to realise about this (basic) problem.

More inspired than yesterday Fer

FFTW...

FFTW libraries downloaded,
now we have to let it work with basic spectrums and link it with my Qwt graphs.
Easy?
I'll try to tell you as soon as possible!

;)

Problems solved...

Problem of paths as expected.
I set up the paths from a .pri file and it worked out as in the examples.

My first graphical window in C++ with Qwt and Qt.
A simple mathematical function:

Step by step...

Qwt almost under my orders...

After trying the examples of Qwt project I got some nice ideas to implement for my OFDM transceiver simulator.

I got some concepts of canvas, pens and basic stuff for plotting basic mathematical functions which is good but...

...it is still not under my complete control...

Once compiled the project examples in the original folder everything went ok and no problems of execution (apart from setting up the Libraries path).

Making it myself and in my own folders it seems that the headers are not found so today I am researching a bit more about it. I guess it is a simple step and it will be mine!
I hope this evening I could post my first Qwt application done by myself !

Cheers and have a great weekend!

Qwt in MacOSX

Last time since I posted, and it had nothing to do with this new post.
But here I am again.

Since I'm working on Qt C++ software development under my MacOSX 10.5 I'm having some configuration "affairs" with it, so here I write the first one.

Deployment of Qt application using Qwt for technical graphs...

Since I'd like to show some OFDM signal spectrums in my application I need to implement it with qwt.
Once I downloaded the qwt source from here, I copied it to my Developer folder and I started "qmaking".
So nice to see that all the .pro files are already created and you don't need anything but qmake for having the software ready...

so in my MacOSX terminal:

fernando-martins-macbook:bin martin$ cd /Developer/qwt-5.2.0/

fernando-martins-macbook:qwt-5.2.0 martin$ qmake -spec macx-g++

and the Makefile is created.

Inside the qwt-5.2.0/ folder there are some examples that can be easily open just following the same procedure.
But what a surprise when once they were build I could not be able to open them with this simple operation:

open bode.app

The libqwt.5.dylib was missing "somewhere" during the creation process of the app...

After installation of qwt, in my OS I could find the libraries in /usr/local/qwt-5.2.0/lib (you can check this path in qwtconfig.pri),
so it is only needed to add this folder to the DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH.

Remember: echo $DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH will show you the current value of the variable.

DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH= {The previous path}:/usr/local/qwt-5.2.0/lib (in my case)

The apps were created normally and I could run them to see how qwt works under Mac :)

Asia 5th day. Summit of Mt Kinabalu and back to KK

It was true, the coldest part was about to arrive.
After a cold night even with blankets and heater working from 8pm, 2:30am arrived soon.
We had supper before climbing and we got ready for the summit.
Head-torches, wind-stoppers (thank you Chema for borrowing yours, it was crucial!), gloves and scarfs were all around but I wasn't so prepared for the cold.
I was wearing shorts, hat, windstopper and headtorch (totally needed). No gloves which I'd miss so much during the climbing.
We started pretty late, finding a big "traffic jam" in the first stage of wooden stairs. Here it was an easy climb but dark as hell since it was 3:15am.
After overcoming all those people our rhythm increased and we (the Australian guys Brett and Ashley and alex and me) felt better without stopping.
Once during the climb I saw myself alone since the group was split up, but I decided to continue in the granite (bare rock) following the rope that guided us. Sometimes that rope helped to climb, but since I hadn't gloves it was more a torture than help, so I decided to grab it the less times possible, trying to keep the hands warm.
Little stops of some seconds I made for having deep breaths, but I did not stop longer.
At 4:30am, aprox. I found myself alone, with no clue of anyone else above me, but I continued following the rope willing to find something new and even more exciting than being alone at 3800m high...
Some steps further the sign of Low's peak 4095.2m high was standing in front of me illuminated with my torch and admired by me.
[Picture of the top]
I was the first in reaching the summit, and the feeling was actually great!
No one was higher than me in between the Himalaya and Papua New guinea in that moment.
Darkness, silence and freezing wind were my only company in that moment. They were a good company from 5:10am, when I reached the top, until four minutes later, When I started to feel cold and to miss people around...
Once the body stopped climbing, the heart rate decreased and the temperature of the body did so, so I started to shiver and to look for a place safe against the wind.
20 after I arrived, a group of guys also arrived suffering also from cold temperature. I tried to warm up eating an energy bar but I don't know if it worked so far...

At 5:40am Alex arrived, we took the picture of both of us on the top
[Picture of both of us on the summit]
and we decided to clomb down just after the Australian guys. The view was not good at all due to the clouds and fog. We noticed that the sunrise had already taken place but we couldn't see the sun at all...
I have to say that we were lucky because on the previous day people couldn't reach the peak because of the weather conditions...

Climbing down, time to warm up again and to take some pictures of the views that eventually the weather allowed us.
[Pics Mt Kinabalu climbing down]

Another breafast was waiting for us at 7am in Laban Rata, the place where we slept the previous night.
[Pic group of 4]
The food there was great, we paid it, but I really did not expect so much food available, so I enjoyed it as I never did!! :)
[Pic of food]

After 3 hours of climbing down in a really comfortable step, we finally reached the place where the bus from Kota Kinabalu left us the previous day, and our legs were claiming for some relax, sincerely deserved relax. We ate for the last time at 1pm and the 2 great Australian guys offered us to be driven to KK, that was a very big relief.
Thanks again guys!! Hope our lives are coming across again in the future!

The trip was 1:30hours and most of the time I was sleeping, really destroyed...
Once arrived, after some Singaporean beers in the entrance of their hotel, we said goodbye to each other, they had a flight in a few hours, and we finally took a look around the city centre, seeing the Filipino market and some jetties before arriving Kuni's house.
Tha swimming pool was the first place where we thought to go after leaving our backpacks at home. Some relaxing movements helped me to feel a bit less tired and helped also my muscles to recover sooner.
After this relaxing bath, we knew via SMS that we were having dinner at Gon's place (The CSurfer scuba diving instructor). She invited us to go and we did not hesitate!
But of course we slept 1 hour and a half before going, our bodies really needed it...
A friend of Gon called Rita picked us up , as well as the Polish guy and a new CSurfer from Finland. We stopped in a Seven Eleven to buy some beers (San Miguel brewed in Phillipines) before going to Gon's place where a stunning dinner was waiting for us. Fish, chicken, rice, dumplings, salad and cakes were the menu and our stomachs were really happy about that. After a very long day this was a total pleasure.
A nice chat stayed together with us during the whole dinner and even some vodka shots showed up in the end of the dinner.

Party in KK
It was Saturday night, so the party in KK was starting engines when we finished dinner. The place where we went was called "bed" (Best Entertainment Destination). We kept going until 2:30am (24h since we woke up in Laban Rata...) when we went home to have some sleep before the next day, when the water life in Tamah Abdul Ramah islands was waiting for us...

Asia 4th day. Climbing up Mt. Kinabalu

The day started at 5:45 when my alarm clock started sounding from the mobile phone.
Why so early? Because our Japanese friend and host told us to leave the apartment at 7:00am and we really wanted to eat properly before climbing and have some time just not to rush.

3 fried eggs with cheese and roasted bread was the main dish, but 2 small bananas and orange juice were also in the menu.
After this and upload the last part of the yesterday's blog post, we got ready and Kuni (our Japanese friend) gave us a lift to the place where the buses depart to Kinabalu park (Ranau direction).
We were 8 people going to KP and one local guy going to Ranau on the bus. Almost 2 hours was the time spent from KK to KP.
after arriving we registered ourselves and paid the entrance, guide and bus transit in between the headquarters in KP and the path's starting point.
I have to say that Kuni helped us a lot booking in advance the lodging place in Laban rata heated dorm (3500m high). And I also have to say that it is not so cheap to climb this peak.
Around RM1000 was the complete compulsory price for 2 people. (around 200€)
Thanks Kuni, without you it had been even more and who knows if we would have heated dorm! ;)

Climbing up
The first part until Laban Rata, where we were spending one night, took us 3 hours, doing it in a very good time, and also rhythm!
It was 6km distance, so 2km/h was the speed. Pretty fast for the conditions of the path.
Big steps, some stones and windy parts. A stop of 10 mins was really needed to eat some energy bars, bananas and drinking some water to keep ourselves hydrated.
We really thought it was not so hard as it was, and once arrived we realised what we'd done...
But in the end, once sitting, eating rice and drinking Sabah tea, our strength cam back again and our mood was recovered.
During the afternoon we did nothing but eating, taking some pictures outside[Picture Laban rata] while the widn was freezing, trying to dry some sweated clothes outside the hut (with the help of some stones), playing some chess [Picture chess] and meeting new people from different nationalities as Australians, Germans, Italians, Malays and even Spanish ones.

Two Aussies from Tasmania were our roommates for that night. We shared a nice chat and some experiences, as well as some advices about Malaysia and our close next steps in the trip.
I really enjoyed your company guys! Nice to meet you Brett and Ashley!

Now I write these lines from bed as usual having my head-torch switched on and about to sleep at 20:30 because at 2:30 am the trail to the summit wants us active again!

The steepest, windiest, and coldest part is waiting for us, so I'll tell you in the next post how it looked like.
Good evening-night!

Asia, 3rd day. 30th July 2009. Zoo and local people

7:30 in the morning came really soon. After arranging a scuba diving day with Gon (our new CSfer friend and also diving instructor)we got ready for the diving day starting at 8:15 in our place when Gon came to pick us up.The day was really raiby and it did not seem it was changing into better conditions,so the people from the diving company adviced us to do it on Sunday instead, when the weather could be better and we'd see something more down in the water.
Without alternative plan we didn't know what to do. We waited on board with Gon and the captain. As it was still raining, the captain proposed to go toSabah's zoo.
He didn't speak proper English, but Gon was translator in between us.
So, as the zoo seemed to be the best (and only) alternative to dive, we accepted, we took our cameras and Gon drove us to the zoo, kind of more than 15 mins by car from Kota Kinabalu.
I know many of you are saying why we are going to the zoo when we have Sabakan or Selangakan, with a very rich natural wildlife, and it is true, we have no excuse possible, but it was really unexpected and we preferred to go somewhere than to lose one day doing nothing.
By the way, going to those natural paradises I told you would take more than 6 hours which we really hadn't.
Finally, in the zoo, with not so many people, we bought the ticket for RM20, while for Malaysian people was RM10.
As written, not so many people were around, so it was almost everything clear to see the animals in a good way.
Orang-utan, Malaysian tiger, crocodiles and many other species of monkeys were there.
After zoo with the captain, Gon and Alex, we went to a little town. A very Malaysian place with a lot of places to eat for a good price. I took rice with fish and curry, actually really good.
I really felt into the Malaysian society and it was one of the best experiences in there at the moment. People was nice and kind, always with a smile prepared for you.
The next step of the day was a daily market where you could buy everything needed for eating. Lots of vegetables, fruits and agricultural products.
One of the things that astonished me were the silk worms and squirrels for eating.
The first ones were alive and moving, really disgusting for a European taste like mine. I guess I would need more time to get used to it...
In the next "shop" we bought some bamboo, onions and tuna for frying it as dinner.
1kg tuna=RM12 (2.5€)
Really cheap and really good quality!

Before put ourselves towards home, we stopped in Captain's home, where his wife and many children were around, without so much, but everything they need to be happy...
They seemed to like us since they followed us while leaving by car until we left the town. I have to say that those children really inspired me and I'll keep a really good memory from them! Terimah Kasi! (Thanks in Malay)

No much time later were we in Kuni's place, having a bath in the swimming pool, relaxing just before of having (finally) a shower, to prepare the bamboo curry, some tuna and rice.
Next day Mt. Kinabalu was expecting us, so better sleep...

While writing these lines laying in bed, the Tibetan music was sounding and Alex was already Knocked out...

So good night and I hope you liked it.

Asia 2nd day. Kota Kinabalu arrival

Yes, after the good Asian dinner, we tried to sleep on the floor of the airport and we also failed to do so.Maybe because it was afternoon for our bodies. After some messages to the family and friends through free WIFI connection in the airport, we decided to eat something regarding at our senseless non sleeping on the pure floor of the airport. It was 4am and the airport seemed so alive at that time.
Not so much more time we had to do in KLIA LCCT until our flight at 6:50 was taking off.Walk around, buying some water and sweets and chat abit are some examples of what we've doneto get some benefit of this useless period of time...
Before departing to KK, there was a big storm and it was raining like hell! The storm was much better from the inside with our new tasty juices we bought.
I was really lucky with my bamboo one, but Alex wasn't with a different one which was really awful...
Since we were really tired and the plane to KK was our last step to reach our CS friend Kuni, the idea of sleeping was more than accepted! What a surprise when all the Asian people fell asleep before us, even before the taking off, and even without jet lag!

Once arrived to Kota Kinabalu, in Borneo island,we were thinking that after more than 2 days of travelling we were done. But buses weren't so often, taxis were kind of expensive and our language skills on the island were not enough to act like local people...Luckily, to women saw us a bit lost asking for a lift to a bus driver who was with an organised trip. They offered us a lift to the centre and we accepted without hesitation.

They were working for an agency (tropicalholidaysparadise.com) and they seemed reliable enough to accept the invitation. (Mum, don't worry, I don't accept every proposition I have ;))They drove us to our friend's job, giving us some advices and also a good chat. Thanks for that!
Once with Kuni, our Japanese CouchSurfing.org host in Kota Kinabalu Grand Ville, he took us home, prepared our bed and introduced 2 other couchsurfers from Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur) and our beloved Poland, more concretely Warsaw.

Afterwards we'd seen ourselves with power enough to go to the centre and sightsee a bit, without expecting that our bodieswould not fight against jet lag for much longer...
We ate closeby Kuni's house for RM5 (1eur=4.6RM aprox.) and started to sightseeing the Mosque where we had to cover our knees abnd wash hands and feet, the Sikh temple, where we had to cover our head as the guy told us.They were 2 of the most important places to visit in KK along with the Sabah museum where our bodies said stop after walk inside...

We would have loved to reach the centre, but with such a sun an tireness, we stopped in the first market we found. We bought some shower utilities, some food for the "tortilla de patata" and breakfasts, two hats and a Malaysian SIM card to use it with my mobile phone.
No more time to waste since we wanted to rest before our meeting in Kuni's place with Gon,another CS friend and also scuba divering instructor.

Coming back home, a heavy rain cought us and we had to make some stops to preserve ourselves dry...After all this tiring day (starting at 3am in Kuala Lumpur International Airport)we had a great Japanese-Malaysian-Polish-Canadian-Spanish dinner.Another CSfer from Canada, was living also in Kuni's place and he cooked some Indian food.We did our speciality "Tortilla de patata" and there was some rice made by Kuni (Rice couldn left inand Asian house!)
After some chat ans some shots of a special local drink, the bed was calling us really loudly. And here I am, laying in bed writing these lines. In the meantime Alex tries to sleep after writing his summary of the day.
My eyes are really heavy and my body prays for some sleep.
Good night to everyone!

P.S. We had no shower during the whole day. A problem with the water pipes allowed us to have a very sticky skin.

Asia, 1st day Asturias-London-Kuala Lumpur

After a great sleeping recovering from 3 days in the SU Oviedo I woka up at 9am before the filght at 15:00 to London Stansted.
I packed and ate before the long trip and my grandfather picked me up at home at 13:00and he brought me to the Asturias airport.
Alex arrived at the same time as me and we started queing. The flight London was nothing special and everything was expected.
The arrival was at 15:50 local time and our next flight to Kuala Lumpur was at 1:25, so, as you all know, we had to wait in the airportuntil that time.Patience, some food prepared by my mother, some ice cream and some reading were our weapons to kill the long period of timethat was among us and the next flight to the Southeast Asia.
The plane which was about to welcome us, was completely different talking about dimension. It was an Airbus 330-300 with 4 engines and 3 rows of people. (The rows in the sides were with 2 rows and the one in the middle was with 4)
This was actually a tough flight.11 since we took offand 6 of them were for sleeping
We had just 2 sandwiches left and no water.Being on a plane it seems normal that we could buy some water and food to the cabin crew, but they told us that we needed Ameriacan dollars, Sterlings or Ringgits from Malaysia if we'd like to put some food in our starving mouths...So, no water, food or anything similar during 11 hours of flight. It was great!
But finally we arrived to KL (like they say) at 20:45, always local time, completely at night and with 29 degrees C and a horrible humidity. We withdrawed some money and we looked for a place to drink and eat. While going through the airport we saw some people in couples getting off from a bus (seems normal), but they were with handcuffs.
We finally got a place where we ate chicken, fryied egg followed by ice creams (2 in my case), bedore going to find a place to sleep in the airport, waiting for our next flight at 6:50 to Kota Kinabalu, where our CS friend was was waiting for us.
Written after dinner and before to sleep in the dinner place.

I'll write every day in my notebook, not knowing if I'll be able to have a laptop and publish it in here, but I'll try it as much as I can...

Poland, what a beautiful experience...

Here I am,

But I carry a lot from Krakow, a lot of experiences, places, parties, friends, facts that will be in my mind for a long time,
and will influence me for future plans and actions...

Today when removing all the pictures from my bedroom and watching the white walls I realised that I'm really leaving this country.
A country which has treated me with respect in every moment and has given me so much life experience.

I really want to thank all of you all the moments we spent together, all the conversations we had, and all the advices and good words
coming out from your mouths. I know we also had not so good moments, but I think this is also making a relationship closera and stronger,
and to us more confident to each other.
With this I want to express that I'll never forget you guys. Have it sure.wherever I'll be, whenever you'll think of me, you'll now you have a friend to count on.

Warszawa

Finally, and after several months living in Poland, I faced the capital, Warszawa. The city which suffered so much exactly 60 years ago, when after the uprising of the Warsaw's people in 1944 the nazi occupation decided to eliminate absolutely every building in there. So we are now talking about one brand-new city, but keeping the style and architectural line it had in the past thanks to Bottarello.

The first thing I realised is that Warsaw is big, pretty big. So forget about going on foot from one part to another if you don't have so much time to spend, because probably you'll spend it walking and getting tired. Since many important places to visit are really separated it gives to the city...

Thanks to the cousins of Olga, we could leave our backpacks in the dormitory and start sightseeing Warsaw having as first choice the Palace of science and culture, the old communist style building, giving as a present by the soviets. The interest part of the building is its height. 115m which allow you to have a very good view of the whole Warsaw, of course, after paying 15/20PLN for the reduced/normal ticket. We are in the capital, life is not for free...

Detail “The palace of Culture”

Detail “View of Warsaw from the Palace of Culture”

After a nice talk with Adam and Kamila eating in a vegetarian restaurant (which very nice enchilada!), we went to the Uprising museum of Warsaw, where you may see how the Polish population stood up and started to fight against the German occupation. A complete collection of media is placed there, which is really worth it to see if the topic interests you a bit.

Another place, or I maybe should say icon, in Warsaw is "the palm", placed in one central round about where you're always passing by when moving from east-west or north-south parts of the city is needed. I guess you are thinking the same I did, a palm doesn't really fit in an Eastern-Europe country, but it's there. Globalisation... :)

Detail “The palm”

Museum of Katyn (Muzeum Katynskie)
Unfortunately, after going pretty far from city centre, and from the place we were sleeping, the museum was closed and we could only took some pictures from the outside :(

Łazienki park
This was one of the parts that I liked the most. Maybe because in Krakow there is no such a park and I really missed it, but I felt so good walking in this park. Many people, trees, flowers, even animals.

Detail “Hungry Squirrel”

The Lazienki park was a place where the king had his own summer palace, nowadays called palace on the water.

Detail ”Palace on the water”

And it has another building called white house really worth seeing.

During all these moments, we’ve been travelling by bus, tram or metro, seeing all the big streets that Warsaw has all over itself.

Detail “Long streets in Warsaw”

Actually the trip was a bit fast as lightning, going at 6:10 on Saturday in the morning and coming back on Sunday at 17:10…
But I think that I really enjoyed the trip. And one of the main reasons was that I had been reading about Warsaw in my lovely Lonely planet and we had the organized plan as well as very good guides who took care of us in the big city of Warsaw. Thank you guys!

I would also like to thank Olga, without you we hadn’t been in Warsaw and I could write these words as I’m doing.
I have to say that her improvements in Spanish are becoming bigger and bigger… ;)

And last but not least, I’d like to say welcome to the blog world to Alejandro, my roommate here in Krakow. Who is becoming a professional photographer since he bought a DSLR camera.
I have no doubt he will be a good one! Go Alex go! :)

Detail “The professional in Łazienki park”

You can read him here: http://aleromar.blogspot.com

I guess he’ll prepare some surprises for us as well. So, enjoy reading!

Thanks everybody who is following me. I really appreciate it!

Warm greetings from Krakow.

Weekend in Kyiv!

Old Soviet union, cruel WWII fights, not lucky 26 of April 1986 in Chernobyl, old Polish city L'viv, huge Dnipro river, currency called hryvnias, big and green city Kyiv and lovely people who greet saying privet! Can you guess in which country I've been recently? I guess it's easy with such an information written...
Ukraine host me during last days and I wanted to talk about it.

Starting from Katowice and this beautiful sunset, all was going on normally. Bus to Katowice airport, checking in, and waiting for my Wizzair plane.

Once in Kyiv, no problem occured since AEGEE exists!! :)
Olga picked me up and since that time, everything was prepared, lovely and in time!
Thank you Olguita!It was great!

When Kyiv people told me that the city I was sightseeing in that moment was one of the greenest of Europe I was very surprised, but you only need a few hours getting yourself lost in the city centre to feel the green in your own body. And if you have the opportunity of visiting it in Spring, don't hesitate!
Here I upload a very good proof of it.

Souvenirs have a place and a proper name. Andriyivs’ky, where you can buy typical Ukrainian clothes, Easter eggs, handmade plates, wooden boxes, and hanging decorations to bring good luck to your home :)

I hope mum and sister will like what I got there for them! :)

Orthodox churches are spread all around Kyiv, and you can recognize them since they have a peculiar shape from the outside. Here you can see one of the most famous ones just next to the street I’ve mentioned before. It’s really nice to see it, and even more if you have good weather like I had!

If the WWII is a topic you like, don't miss the museum located on the top of one of the seven hills of the city.
You'd see some of the battles in Ukraine well explained, and the power that the soviet union had in that time. Thank you Irina for the well explained tour!!

I also want to thank Choranova who had to get up early for me not to get lost in Kyiv!
thank you Ola!

воля is the word you can appreciate watching the national emblem,
which means liberty. Another thing that I know thanks to AEGEE Kyiv people!

I also have to say that they are working so hard in AGORA preparations and since Magusa one has finished, all of you should be thinking of coming to Fall Agora Kyiv 2009 ;)

In the picture, one of the brave guys in AEGEE Kyiv board. Keep going Petya! :)

Summarizing, I have to say that I really liked Kyiv.
And I only have one word to the fantastic people from AEGEE who took care of me:
Спасибо!

My first Birthday since I have blog...

Yes, I am getting old... but It doesn't mean I'm not happy.
This is my first Birthday abroad, far from my family and friends, and someones could think that it's sad or not the way it should be.
But actually I'm feeling really good, a guy beloved even being abroad, receiving greetings from many places, in many languages and by different means of communication.

And this feeling couldn't be possible if you weren't there guys, all the ones who make me happy, make me laugh, make me think, and also make me get angry, but in the end, I can resume it:
you make me feel alive! so I can enjoy this life, full of different situations and emotions, made for living it in every minute of our lifes.

So, I want to thank you all again, the fact that you remembered me in this day keeping me more alive than anytime before.

THANK YOU!
